What about me?

Sobre mi...

I am Jonathon Moreels, a British Architectural Designer and Arquitecto (Col.16.669) (Spanish Architect), living in Madrid, Spain but maintaining strong links to the UK.

I am an enthusiastic, creative designer interested in contemporary architectural design, sustainable thinking in architecture (Ec0-design, BREEAM, Passivhaus, Zero Carbon Homes) and the use of technology in architecture and construction, design and presentation; including the use of modular construction techniques, BIM, 3D & augmented reality and social media.

From the beginning of my career I have understood the importance for an architect to communicate his ideas with his clients and the wider public, first producing 3D presentations in 1997. I have prepared and taken part in numerous public presentations, utilising the latest in presentation tools and technology to present schemes and ideas. I also use these techniques to develop ideas directly with my clients and help turn them into a reality.

Over the years, my role and thus experience has developed beyond a traditional architectural role seeing me take an active part in various aspects of business development including OJEU/tender applications, Quality Assurance (ISO9001) policy development, sustainability policy development, ICT development, BIM Implementation and PR & Marketing.

I was one of the first architects to regularly utilise twitter and have now have developed a large social media presence, being listed in the Architects Journal and Building Design Magazine. I continue to develop my social media presence and now post in both English and Spanish.

I am a keen advocate of technology and I endeavour to keep myself and whatever partnerships in which I work at the cutting edge.

In my previous practice I was responsible for all the Information Technology, designing, developing and building the computer server network and communication system. I managed the office ICT system and was in charge its maintenance and purchase of new equipment. I also led in the production of all 2D and 3D presentations for architectural projects within the office. I first used 3D presentations in 1997, producing visuals from AutoCAD and 3D Studio Max. I was an early adopter of Sketchup, first using the program in 2005.

I am very interested in the future of Architecture, the use of Revit, and more particularly BIM (Building Information Modelling) and I was instrumental in the introduction of Revit software into Niven Architects in 2006 and generally promoted the use of  BIM software within the office.

Whilst at Niven Architects my role as ICT Manager evolved to incorporate the position of BIM Facillitator and worked with, and assist a former colleague, Johnathan Munkley, on a KTP (Knowledge Transfer Partnership) with Teesside University as part of a two year programme to make Niven Architects iBIM level 3 compliant by 2014.

I am now investigating the use and application of augmented reality as a presentation tool...so watch this space!

I started my career in 1999, after graduating from Cardiff University, at a small regional practice based in Darlington in the North East of England where I gained a wealth of experience working on a variety of projects including Museums, Schools for Special Needs, Office Buildings and Residential projects for clients from individuals through to multinationals companies.

Following 4 years at the practice I relocated to Madrid, Spain, where I further developed my design knowledge through involvement in a number of high profile retail projects for clients such as Burberry, Dior, Vans Shoes, Eves Roche and Tie Rack.

I returned to the UK in 2006 bringing my experience in concept โ€œfront endโ€ design and sustainable design together with Lead Project Architect experience to work on a variety of new projects including Code for Sustainable Homes Affordable Homes, Zero Carbon Hunting Lodge, The Durham Dales: Zero Carbon Hotel, Golf  & Spa Development, Various BREEAM assessed school and college projects and the redevelopment of a section of Darlington town centre to create the Feethams Leisure Development.

In 2013 I took the step to move back to Madrid, Spain where I established myself as a freelance architectural designer / arquitecto and collaborate with Spanish Developers and Architectural Practices as well as UK based practices on projects ranging from individual contemporary villas to large office developments in the UK.
